You rarely catch a houseplant pest. You catch the damage it left behind.


Why you almost always find pests too late

A spider mite is a quarter of a millimetre long. A newly hatched thrip is smaller. Fungus gnat larvae live in the top few centimetres of soil where you never look. By the time something is obvious enough to make you stop and lean in — webbing across a leaf joint, a shelf gone sticky, a fine speckling that wasn't there last week — the colony has usually been feeding and breeding for two or three weeks already.

This is the real problem with houseplant pests, and it is not the pest itself. Most of them are treatable. What makes them costly is the lag between arrival and discovery, because in that gap a few insects become hundreds, one Specimen becomes three, and a wipe-down becomes a quarantine.

Summer widens that gap. Warmth compresses a pest's breeding cycle, open windows let winged pests drift in, and every new plant from a shop or bag of unsealed potting mix is a possible arrival. Identify the pest by what you see

You do not need to identify an insect to know you have one. Nearly every common houseplant pest announces itself through the damage or residue it leaves, and that is far more visible than the pest. Start here.

That sticky film in the last row has a name worth knowing: honeydew, the sugary waste that sap-feeding insects excrete. If a leaf or the shelf beneath it feels tacky, something is drinking from your plant even if you cannot yet see it. The black patches that sometimes follow are sooty mould growing on the honeydew — harmless in itself, but a reliable sign the infestation is well established.

The six pests you are most likely to meet

Spider mites

What you see: leaves that look dusty or stippled with pale pinprick dots, then fine webbing strung between leaf and stem as the colony grows. The mites themselves — Tetranychus urticae, the two-spotted spider mite — are barely visible moving specks on the leaf undersides.

Why now: mites love hot, dry air. A heat wave and a running air-conditioner create their ideal climate, which is why they surge in high summer and in winter when forced-air heating dries a room out.

How to treat: raise the humidity around the plant, because dry air is half of what they need. Take the Specimen to a sink or shower and rinse both leaf surfaces thoroughly, undersides included. Then treat with insecticidal soap or a neem-oil spray, coating the undersides where they live, and repeat every five to seven days for three cycles — their life cycle is short enough in warm weather that a single spray always misses the next generation. Isolate the plant while you do this; mites travel.

Fungus gnats

What you see: small dark flies that lift off the soil when you water or nudge the pot, then settle again. They are weak fliers and tend to stay near the plant.

Why now: the adults are a nuisance, but the real signal is what they tell you about your soil. Fungus gnats breed in the top layer of chronically moist potting mix, so a gnat problem is very often a watering problem — the same overwatering pattern covered in overwatering versus underwatering. Fix the soil moisture and you remove their nursery.

How to treat: let the top two to three centimetres of soil dry fully between waterings, and water from the bottom for a while so the surface stays dry. Yellow sticky traps laid flat catch the adults. For the larvae, a soil-drench of the biological control Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis — sold as mosquito bits — or a thin top layer of coarse sand or grit that the adults cannot lay eggs through, breaks the cycle. No spraying required.

Mealybugs

What you see: white, cottony, slightly waxy tufts wedged into leaf joints, stem crooks, and sometimes along the roots. They move slowly, so people often mistake the first few for a spot of mould or fluff.

Why now: they thrive in the warm, still air of an indoor collection year-round and spread plant to plant by contact, which is why a crowded shelf in summer is their ideal setting. Mealybugs produce honeydew, so expect stickiness and sooty mould with a heavier infestation.

How to treat: dab each visible bug with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol, which cuts through their waxy coat on contact. Follow with insecticidal soap or neem across the whole plant, and check the leaf undersides and the top of the root ball. Repeat weekly — eggs hatch on a delay — and keep the plant isolated until you have gone two weeks with nothing new.

Scale

What you see: small brown, tan, or blackish bumps along stems and the midribs of leaves. They look so much like part of the plant that most people miss them entirely until the honeydew appears. Unlike a healthy bit of bark, they can be scraped off with a fingernail.

Why now: scale is the slow, patient pest — an established infestation may have been building for months before you notice it, and summer growth simply gives it more fresh tissue to spread onto.

How to treat: scrape off what you can see, then wipe the area with an alcohol-dampened cloth. Because the adults hide under a hard protective shell, contact sprays struggle; a horticultural or neem oil that smothers them works better than a soap that has to touch the insect directly. This is the pest that most rewards patience — plan on several rounds over a month, and keep checking the stems you thought were clean.

Thrips

What you see: silvery or bronze scarring on leaves, often in streaks, with tiny black specks of frass. The insects are slender and quick, and the clearest tell is distorted, stunted new growth, because thrips attack the tender tissue as it emerges.

Why now: thrips reproduce quickly in warmth and are strong enough fliers to arrive through an open window. They are among the harder houseplant pests to fully clear, and some species carry plant viruses, so early action matters more here than with most.

How to treat: rinse the plant, set out blue sticky traps (thrips are drawn to blue more than yellow), and treat with neem or insecticidal soap on a repeating five-to-seven-day schedule. Prune out the worst-hit new growth, since damaged tissue will not recover and often still harbours eggs. Isolate rigorously — this is not a pest to gamble on.

Aphids

What you see: clusters of small soft-bodied insects — green most often, but also black, grey, or peach — packed onto the newest, softest shoots and flower buds. They are the easiest of this group to spot, because they gather in the open and in numbers.

Why now: aphids reproduce astonishingly quickly in warm weather, so a handful on a Monday can be a colony by the weekend. The upside is that they are also the softest and least protected of these pests, so they respond well to the gentlest treatment.

How to treat: for a light case, a firm spray of water knocks most of them off, since they struggle to climb back. Follow with insecticidal soap on the shoot tips where they gather, and check back every few days — their speed of reproduction, not their toughness, is what you are fighting. Of all six, aphids are usually the quickest to bring under control.


Treat gently, in the right order

Notice how much these treatments overlap. That is deliberate — you do not need a different product for every pest. A calm, ordered response handles nearly all of them.

  1. Isolate first. The moment you confirm a pest, move the plant away from your other Specimens. Contagion is the difference between treating one plant and treating five, and it costs you nothing to do immediately.
  2. Remove what you can physically. A rinse in the shower, a wipe of the leaf undersides, an alcohol swab on visible mealybugs or scale. Every insect you remove by hand is one the spray does not have to reach.
  3. Reach for the gentlest effective treatment. Insecticidal soap and neem oil handle the great majority of houseplant infestations. Coat the leaf undersides and the crevices, treat in the evening rather than in direct sun to avoid leaf burn, and — this is the step people skip — repeat on the pest's life-cycle interval, every five to seven days for two or three rounds. A single application almost always leaves eggs behind.
  4. Treat the soil for soil pests. For fungus gnats, the answer is dry-down discipline and a larval control, not a leaf spray.
  5. Persist past the first clean-looking week. The most common reason treatment fails is stopping too soon. Give it the full cycle.

A word on the honest meaning of "without harsh chemicals." Insecticidal soap and neem oil are still pesticides — botanical, low-toxicity ones, but not nothing. Chemical-free pest control is a myth; the realistic goal is the gentlest thing that actually works, applied deliberately, and kept away from pets and children until it has dried. That is a standard worth holding to, and it is very different from reaching for a broad synthetic insecticide the moment you see a bug.


Catch it before you can see it

An honest limitation

Frequently asked questions about houseplant pests

Where do houseplant pests actually come from?

Most arrive on something you brought inside: a new plant from a shop or a swap, cut flowers or produce on the counter, or occasionally a bag of potting mix that was not sealed. Winged pests like thrips, whiteflies, and aphids can also drift in through an open window, which is why arrivals spike in summer. The practical takeaway is to quarantine every new plant for a couple of weeks before it joins the shelf — the habit costs you nothing and stops most collection-wide outbreaks before they start. It is one of the mistakes beginners learn the hard way.

Why do pests get so much worse in summer?

Heat compresses breeding cycles. A spider mite generation that takes three weeks in a cool room can complete in under a week when the air is hot and dry, so populations that would have crept along explode instead. Dry air from air-conditioning specifically favours mites, and open windows give flying pests a way in. If you are managing a heat wave already, treat pest-watching as part of the same job.

Do I have to throw an infested plant away?

Rarely. Nearly every common houseplant pest is treatable if you catch it before it has overwhelmed the plant — isolate, remove what you can by hand, treat gently, and repeat on the life-cycle interval. The cases worth giving up on are a badly weakened plant carrying a stubborn pest like heavy thrips or scale that keeps rebounding after several honest rounds of treatment, where the risk to the rest of your collection outweighs saving the one. Even then, isolate and try first.

Are neem oil and insecticidal soap safe around pets and children?

They are considerably lower in toxicity than broad synthetic insecticides, which is why they are the right first reach. But "lower" is not "none" — keep pets and children away from a treated plant until the spray has fully dried, and store the concentrates as you would any garden product.
